Girls and women of all ages look up to Disney princesses for their brains, beauty, and individual strengths. Many ladies are also attracted to each character’s outfits and accessories. As royals, the princesses are expected to wear beautiful jewelry to mark their status and make them look prettier.
Due to animation constraints, you don’t always see Disney princesses wear that many jewelry pieces. But if they were real people living in our world, what accessories would they be wearing often? Here are some ideas:
- Bracelets
A lot of girls enjoy wearing a bracelet or two. This type of jewelry can come in different styles like thick bangles, precious beads, and tennis bracelets. A character like Esmeralda would stack a bunch of bracelets on both her wrists, so they would jingle as she danced. She might even have versions to wear on her ankles, too. Since she’s from France, she may also accessorize with lots of costume jewelry and matching bracelets, which were popularized by Napoleon Bonaparte back in the day.
Mulan was given several accessories in preparation to meet the matchmaker. You won’t see it in the film, but she would’ve worn a couple of bracelets, a pair of earrings, and a necklace. She would also wear jade jewelry since the gem is significant to Chinese culture. Jade also represents the balance of yin and yang and is believed to ward off evil spirits from the wearer. Mulan’s grandmother would have insisted that she wear those.
- Earrings
Earrings are a small and subtle, yet effective accessory to get people to look at your face. Some Disney princesses may enjoy a bit of attention so that they can wear a pair for special occasions.
Snow White would wear ruby earrings to match her iconic red hairbow. Rubies represent beauty and success in love for some cultures, connecting Snow White’s story of getting her true love’s kiss. Ariel might also have a collection of earrings she found in her adventures. But as the daughter of King Triton, she could have a pair of pearl drop earrings to wear while in the undersea court with her royal father and sisters.
Being an active princess who enjoys archery and horseback riding more than anything else, Merida would probably choose to sport stud earrings. Long necklaces, rings, and tiaras would just get in the way. Studs in bright green emerald gems will enhance this young princess’s fiery looks and compliment her curly red hair. Emerald jewelry is also believed to protect its wearer from evil spells, one of which unfortunately turned Merida’s mother and triplet brothers into bears in the film.
- Necklaces
Among the different types of jewelry, necklaces are the most often seen worn by most Disney princesses. Pocahontas is one of those princesses with an iconic necklace: her late mother’s turquoise heirloom. Turquoise is an important gemstone among some Native American tribes, so Pocahontas would likely wear more of it. She might even wear pendants on it with beautiful and intricate geometric patterns the Native American communities love.
Another Disney princess who would cherish a necklace is Moana. This island princess has the gorgeous Heart of Te Fiti, a sea-green obsidian pendant on a string with pearls. Women like Moana may want to steer clear of bracelets but stay pretty by accessorizing with necklaces. She might also enjoy shell jewelry with other eye-catching and magical pendants like these elegant Disney necklaces.
Though not an official Disney princess, Nala would likely wear a necklace. She’d sport it like a beaded choker many ladies from the various African tribes do. It’ll have many colorful beads in different sizes. If Nala were human, it would also serve as a form of nonverbal communication with her beloved Simba.
- Rings
Disney princesses don’t really wear rings in the movies. However, they’re the perfect accessory for someone born into opulence like Jasmine. In Disney canon, Agrabah is located in the Middle East, but it also borrows some cultural elements from India. A princess like Jasmine would wear several jewelry pieces on her person, especially rings.
She’d have rings made of gold embedded with opals and turquoise gems to display her affluence. Jasmine would also have many golden jewelry pieces, rings included, created with expert craftsmanship. Some of them would be heirlooms from her mother or gifts from her father. Her fingers would be decked with glittering rings on those special occasions in Agrabah’s royal palace.
- Tiaras
You can’t think of a princess and not think of her in a tiara. It’s almost seen as a staple accessory for royalty, but not all Disney princesses wear one.
Tiana is a princess with a tiara in her official design. As the wife of Prince Naveen, she’ll wear tiaras at all official functions. So, she’d have one in white gold with emerald and diamond embellishments for her green gowns reminiscent of her time as a frog.
Rapunzel would wear a tiara as the rightful princess of the kingdom of Corona. Her tiaras could have amber jewels to represent the sun, an essential symbol for her character. Being a free-spirited princess who dabbles in arts and crafts, she might even make her own fairy tiaras for fun.
Other characters who marry princes like Belle and Cinderella would also don tiaras to mark their new positions in life. Cinderella may have tiaras with blue and white diamonds and pearls, while Belle could have golden ones to match her dress and complement her hazel eyes. Pro tip: Pick your princess gown first (check out this page for that) and then decide which type of tiara would complement it perfectly!
Jewelry is a precious accessory that could make any girl look regal. Disney princesses may already have their own iconic pieces, but it’s always fun to imagine them wearing more than what they usually do.
