I love fashion, obviously. But I don’t love the toll that fashion can take on the environment. Costume designer Laura Cristina Ortiz is working to change all that. Her amazing Disney inspired designs are gorgeous, whimsical, and sustainable.
Ortiz entered the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show with a dress inspired by Wall-E. The catch? The dress was made completely out of trash! The experience provided Ortiz with a new found passion for creating fashion with sustainable materials – all with a Disney twist.
“What started out as a fashion experiment ended up becoming a whole education of sustainable fashion,” Ortiz said.
Designing Disney caught up with Ortiz to talk about her inspirations, process, and love of all things Disney.
“What connected me to the Disney films so much growing up was these whimsical worlds, these colorful palettes, and fabulous music, to the characters themselves – their personalities, and the challenges they may face,” Ortiz said.
I can definitely relate to Ortiz on that one! The Disney films and characters hold a special place in my heart too! If you want to hear more about this amazing designer and how she’s using a sustainability mindset to explore fashion as it relates to The Little Mermaid, head over to Designing Disney on Facebook to watch the episode.
