Recently, my family and I spent two wonderful nights at Disney’s Port Orleans: French Quarter Resort for a bit of a staycation. Living in central Florida, we still try to take advantage of and enjoy all the amenities that Disney offers. So, we packed our bags and headed to the theoretical Bayou for some good old fashion fun.
When I asked my son what he wanted to do for his fourth birthday, he said he wanted to go to a hotel with a big pool. You got it, kid! Together, we looked online at pictures of different pools at Walt Disney World, and we chose Port Orleans: French Quarter Resort for a few different reasons.
Top Five Reasons to Stay at Disney’s Port Orleans: French Quarter Resort
1. Location, Location, Location
Disney’s Port Orleans is located within the Disney Springs Resort Area of Walt Disney World. That means, you are always close to shopping, dining, and entertainment. Plus, with the bus transportation included with any Walt Disney World hotel stay, you can easily get to any of the theme parks. Then, when you want to stay close to “home” but still have a bit of an adventure, take the internal bus transfer to Port Orleans: Riverside for another slice of the resort.
During our staycation, we kept things simple and spent the majority of the time at our resort, forgoing any theme parks on this visit. However, we did head over to Disney’s Contemporary Resort to enjoy dinner at Chef Mickey’s one night.
2. Doubloon Lagoon
Another great feature of this resort is the large pool with a water slide. At Doubloon Lagoon, it’s Mardi Gras every day! Come slide down Scales, the 51-foot-long snaking sea serpent slide, whose tongue deposits you into the lagoon with a mighty splash.
Guests can parade around this Mardi Gras-themed pool area where King Neptune sits astride a giant sea serpent. Kids and adults will love taking a slide down this sea serpent’s tongue for a splash landing. My son climbed the stairs to the water slide and slid into the pool about a hundred times or more during our two-night stay. It was definitely the highlight of his staycation!
Around the pool area, you’ll also find jazz-loving gators and clamshell water features as well as the nearby Mardi Grogs pool bar. For kids under 48 inches who love adventure, there is an awesome splash pad! Gaint buckets of water dump over the area, which includes two water slides and plenty of splashing opportunities.
At various times throughout the day, Cast Members hosted activities around the pool deck. We took time out of our splash time to make some Mickey Mouse tie-dye t-shirts! For about $20 per t-shirt, we got a great keepsake that was fun to make.
3. Beignets
It’s not just Tiana that loves beignets! Many Guests of Walt Disney World will make a stop at this resort just to pick up a bag of the beignets. In the main hall, you’ll find Scat Cat Beignets; Mickey shaped Beignets served with a trio of savory and sweet dipping sauces.
When you are on vacation, it’s totally okay to eat Beignets for breakfast, right?! I know we did!
4. Something for Everyone to Eat
While Disney’s Port Orleans: French Quarter Resort does not have a table service restaurant on site, it does have Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory, serving up quick-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is something for everyone at this location! From Pizza and chicken tenders to jambalaya and po’ boys.
While we had some hits and some misses here, we loved the easy and laid-back atmosphere. There was plenty to look at around the dining hall and we never had a problem finding an empty table. Everything was clean and perfect for a busy family on the go!
5. Recreation and Entertainment
For those looking for a staycation, this resort is where to go! You can easily fill your day with fun without ever leaving your resort. Besides the pool and splash pad, we spent time checking out the large playground, and spacious arcade area. While I didn’t beat my personal best in Ski Ball, I was able to practice my throw!
On my son’s actual birthday, we headed over to Riverside for a horse-drawn carriage ride around both of the resorts. It was such a relaxing and unique way to take in the sights and slow down a bit.
This resort also hosts campfire activities, movies under the stars, and crafting opportunities. Just make sure to check the posted events calendar when you check in!
Our staycation at Disney’s Port Orleans: French Quarter Resort was exactly what we were looking for! My son had an unforgettable fourth birthday, the adults got to unwind a bit, and overall, the living was easy!
