As the petals are falling, getting us closer to showtime for the Hollywood debut of Beauty & Beast, we’re adding to our previous Belle and Mrs. Potts Disney Bounding by bringing you fashionistas a Cogsworth look.
Scroll below to see how we curated this Cogsworth: All the Time Disneybounding look. It’s loaded with Victorian and Steampunk elements.
Disneybounding 101: know your character AND never wear your character. Cogsworth is a Victorian wooden clock. It might seem intuitive to wear a watch as some kind of accessory, however groundbreaking and untraditionally worn in the hair or as a brooch. But since Cogsworth is a clock, that is a no-no! Instead, break it down.
Cogs are the moving innard parts of a clock. Fortunately there is a style of fashion that encapsulates these cogs and Victorian essence of Cogsworth. Steampunk is where it’s at! Steampunk is a style known as neo-Victorian, inspired by steam factories and machinery – hence the cogs.
When I was curating this Cogsworth look I knew that the accessories had to speak to the character since the palette of browns was a bit blase for my typical taste. This look started with the gold oxfords as a way to implement Cogsworth’s gold elements; the metallic of these oxfords adds a touch of elegance and the oxford style offers that structured masculinity to go with his “bow” and clock hands “mustache”.
We had so much fun searching for Victorian and steampunk accessories to create this look without being overly cheesy or literal. Cogsworth himself appears to have a gold “bow” at his neck, as part of his clock pieces. Naturally, we opted for a bib necklace with gold and bling as the “bow”. It also appears as if Cogsworth has a hat or headpiece; thus, we added this Steampunk gear hair comb to the mix. You might even opt for a small hat headband. We even suggest curly hair or pintucked curls if you’re all-in retro Steampunk.
The Steampunk gears continue throughout in this neat Steampunk gears ring and bracelet combo and set of copper and silver gears earrings.
For the brown palette, I opted for khaki corduroy skinnies instead of brown skinnies to add some texture and because, after all, Victorian style is all about velvet. Corduroy was the next best thing without being too heavy of a pairing with the incredible blouse. A contrasting darker brown ruffle blouse adds drama, class, texture, and movement. We love the pintucked collar, ruffle detailing, and waistcoast-inspired bodice that is put together like monsieur Cogsworth. It appears on the model that you may even be able to tuck the sleeves inside if you would prefer to go sleeveless with this blouse!
