There’s this rule in Disneyland: kids 12 and under can dress up as their favorite Disney characters. But what if you’re 13 and older and want to look like Mickey or Minnie? That’s where Disneybounding comes in. Disney fan, Leslie Kaye, created this method to bypass this rule. It’s essentially being in costume without wearing a full costume. Disneybounding gives you more freedom to experiment and use clothing you may already have.
Among the ones in Disney’s roster, Jessie of Toy Story is one of those characters Disneybounders don’t usually take inspiration from. But you’ll be surprised how easy it is to dress up like her with minimal pieces. To guide you in your transformation into Toy Story’s energetic cowgirl, read this tutorial for everything you need:
1. Blings, Rings, And Other Things
If you look at Jessie’s official outfit, you might feel overwhelmed to Disneybound as her. You can start small first like accessories. Since she’s a cowgirl doll, check your collection for anything close to horse-themed jewelry.
U-shaped pendants can stand as horseshoes while horse-shaped ones are pretty obvious accessories. You may have received horse ring gifts one time but never found the opportunity to wear them. Now’s a perfect time. Other people might not notice it at first when you wear it, but when the light hits just right, you’ll get heads turning.
Appropriate accessories complete any outfit, but your Disneybound Jessie costume isn’t done yet. When you’ve settled on what jewelry to wear, you can move on to the big picture.
2. Sunny Yellow Meets Bright White
Jessie’s upper garments are a vivid and eye-catching yellow-and-white. There are a million ways to achieve this color combo, but the point of Disneybounding is to be as subtle as possible.
If your wardrobe is already arranged by color, then you’ll have an easier time looking for clothes. In the summer, try wearing a white tank top under a lightweight yellow button-down tied up to your midriff to dress up as Jessie. A yellow jacket or cardigan over an inner white shirt will keep you warm and toasty on colder days.
Get inspiration from your daily fashion to make an outfit that screams ‘Jessie the Cowgirl.’ If you wear feminine tops often, you’re bound to have either a puff-sleeved or ruffled blouse in Jessie’s color palette. You can never go wrong with a simple white t-shirt either. All you need is to jazz it up with a yellow scarf, ribbon, or chunky necklace if your wardrobe lacks that bright color.
3. Comfy And Cool Bottoms
When you think of cowgirls and cowboys, you’re more than likely to imagine them wearing denim jeans. Jessie wears them, too, except that you see more of her leather cow-print chaps than the actual denim.
The great thing about denim is you can pair it with many colors and patterns. So, no matter what top you wear, chances are they’ll match well with denim bottoms. You also have other options aside from jeans like shorts and skirts. Denim skirts will give you a girly Jessie while denim shorts will provide you with a sporty, active Jessie. A denim jumper also gives an air of youthfulness and boundless energy, which the character is known for.
If you’re not fond of denim, that’s no problem. You can replace that with white-and-black bottoms instead. Try looking for cow-print leggings or pants to emulate Jessie’s leather chaps. A cow-print skirt or solid color tutu adds femininity to the cowgirl’s Disneybound style, too. As long as you feel comfortable, you’ll enjoy prancing around as Jessie wherever you go.
4. Fancy Footwear
You’re not going to walk around Disneyland barefoot. Not even Tinkerbell Disneybounders will do that. Shoes are an excellent way to show which character you’re dressed up as if the rest of your outfit is as subtle as can be. With Jessie, especially, you can let people realize who you’re copying once they see your shoes.
Your first go-to footwear is a pair of sturdy leather boots. Cowboys and cowgirls need boots to go about their tasks, so Jessie (even as a toy) wears them, too. Choose brown leather to match her boots, but black will work fine if you don’t have a brown pair available. The movies don’t show how high up Jessie’s boots go, but you assume they go as far up to the knees. Ankle boots are no problem either and will look great worn with a skirt or shorts.
For a more casual look, you can also pick regular sneakers. These shoes work best for those who find boots too constricting. Go with a black pair, or if you have brown sneakers, these can stand in for Jessie’s brown leather boots.
5. Crowning Glory
Jessie wears a neat single braid tied with a yellow bow to match her active lifestyle. You can imitate this to a tee or level it up with two braids instead. Hold them down with white or red ribbons to make things different. Redheads have it easy—you don’t need to dye your hair anymore.
Don’t fret, Disneybounders with short or differently-colored hair. You don’t have to wear a wig to pull off Jessie’s look. Though, you’re more than welcome to wear one if you want. Jessie’s got another well-known part of her outfit: her hat. Top your crowning glory with a similar cowboy’s hat in the same color or wear any red headpiece like a beanie or a sun hat.
Since the Toy Story movies are part of Disney, you could also wear Mickey Mouse ears in red. If you can find mouse ears in Jessie’s most striking patterns (e.g., her yellow-and-white top and her cow-print chaps), feel free to wear them. You can make your own, too, with a plain hairband and some cardboard circles. There are many options for you to try, and there’s no reason to leave your hair bare when you’re Disneybounding someone as exciting as Jessie.
6. Best Face Forward
One of the best parts about being in costume—without actually wearing one—is putting on makeup. Now’s a great time to experiment with makeup styles and bolder colors if you’re used to wearing neutral palettes daily. Jessie’s most noticeable color is red, so get your brightest red lipstick and swipe that on your lips. Play around with various lipstick styles like a matte or a gradient just-ate-a-lollipop look.
Jessie is a doll with a, presumably, plastic head. That means her face is immaculately smooth at all times. Humans can’t have that, so the best thing you can do is put a foundation for flawless-looking skin. Make sure it matches your skin tone so you won’t appear two shades different in person or in photos. Dab on a healthy amount of blush, too, to get Jessie’s rosy cheeks.
Ride On, Cowgirl
Disneybounding is a fantastic way to look like your favorite Disney characters without spending too much on a costume. You can find more casual pieces similar to a character’s outfit tucked somewhere in your closet.
If you want to dress up like Jessie the cowgirl but don’t have legitimate chaps or a cowboy hat, you could always look like her in your own way. Subtlety is key in the art of Disneybounding. You can amplify your daily outfits by using her colors, patterns, and unique accessories.
