A few years ago, I was asked if I’d ever heard about Beads for Life and the Bead Outpost at Epcot. I am an avid Disney goer but, I will admit, when I am at Epcot I am usually there to eat around the world for the Food and Wine Festival and I don’t pay attention to much else at that time. I told them that I wasn’t familiar and, the next thing I know, I am being given a lovely bracelet from the Bead Outpost. I decided that as someone who goes to Disney as often as I do, and likes to do so stylishly, didn’t know about this then maybe others didn’t either. So here are the facts.
When Disney has old guide maps or any other older, unused Disney paper products they collect them at Walt Disney World. From these papers, colorful pieces are hand selected so they can be shipped to Africa. In Africa, the artisans carefully hand craft these recycled papers into unique beads which are then returned to Walt Disney World. These beads are various colors and shapes due to the different colors of the paper products that are sent to Africa and the care and craftsmanship of each individual artisan. These beads are even water resistant! I know because I have worn it in the pool by accident and it was as lovely when I got out as when I got in.
The part that I love so much is that my favorite place on Earth is helping the planet and helping countries that need it. When talking to the cast members at the booths I was told that two of the charities being helped are Water is Life Kenya and Outreach Uganda. That’s two countries that are being helped that are in need. It warms my heart to know this.
There such a great variety of styles of the beads and the different types of jewelry pieces you can buy. Necklaces, bracelets, chokers, anklets and earrings are all premade for purchase or, if you prefer, you can choose your own beads and make your own! There used to be Bead Outposts at Epcot in the World Showcase and at Hollywood Studios, however, I know for a fact the one at Epcot has been closed down and moved to Animal Kingdom. I do not have confirmation about the one at Hollywood Studios.
So next time you are at Walt Disney World and are thinking about purchasing an inexpensive souvenir, (the costs range as shown above), why not stop by a booth and buy yourself a piece of the magic? You’ll be helping countries in need, the planet and yourself by purchasing these fashionable items. If you’ve already partook in this trend, share some photos with me of you in your jewelry in the comment box below!
