These two amazing Disney Dreamers Academy Alumni are doing their part in helping make a difference during this pandemic! I know it’s not our usual topic, but I think it’s nice to spread some good news and happy stories, especially in times like these!
Just a bit of background–The Disney Dreamers Academy is a fabulous four-day mentoring program that started in 2008. 100 high school students are selected each year from all over the country to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE. This four-day adventure helps encourage these bright young minds to make a difference in the world and to never stop dreaming. Ashlyn Pinkins from Gretna Louisiana and Kaylin Garnett from Augusta, Georgia are two of these fabulous alums who are particularly equipped to use their skills right now!
Ashlyn is a graduate of the 2011 Disney Dreamers Academy and is now a public health epidemiologist in Louisiana. She documents and tracks cases of COVID-19 by gathering data from hospitals and other medial organizations. She says that her time at Disney Dreamers Academy taught her that “no dream is out of reach as long as you keep working hard.”
Kaylin is a graduate of the 2016 Disney Dreamers Academy and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. In addition to school, she is a certified nursing assistant and unit manager at a nearby nursing home. She was chosen to care for patients that have tested positive for COVID-19. Through her efforts caring for and managing administrative duties surrounding these patients, she has helped contain the spread of the virus in the nursing home. She keeps dreaming of being an EMT and is well on her way. After all, she already passed the exam! She says that her time at Disney Dreamers Academy taught her “the value of teamwork and inspir[ed] her to never give up on her dreams.”
