Lucasfilm and Disney are thrilling fans and catering to our inner science nerd with their new digital series: “Science and Star Wars.” The new series will air exclusively on the Star Wars Facebook page and will explore the science of the Star Wars universe.
So just how close are real world scientists to emulating the technology that we see in the film? “Science and Star Wars” sets out to answer that question. The first episode tackles the pop culture phenomena of lightsabers. Star Wars Rebels actor Taylor Gray discussed the mythology behind the combat lasers and explores how close we really are to harnessing the power of the galaxy’s most iconic weapon.

In each episode of the 10-episode series, host Anthony Carboni will discuss topics and technology with a rotating roster of researchers, scientific experts, guest stars. Every week the team will push the limits of science through experiments and demonstrations inside the “Science and Star Wars” lab.
“For more than 40 years, the science fantasy of Star Wars has pushed the limits of science fact in the real world,” said Mickey Capoferri, Senior Director of Content and Programming, Lucasfilm. “We know that there’s a strong overlap between Star Wars fans and people who are interested in science. ‘Science and Star Wars’ explores this inspiration and overlap.”
“‘Our goal is to extend the world of Star Wars to all digital platforms — from video to messaging — to draw in new generations of fans and to create daily Star Wars experiences for this audience,” said Andrew Sugerman, EVP of Publishing and Digital Media at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “‘Science and Star Wars’ give us a unique opportunity to explore a new angle to the Star Wars universe while highlighting STEM topics in an entertaining way.”
