Misan Harriman and Disney reveal first look of Mickey & Friends: The Power of Friendship photography series, featuring Leigh Anne Pinnock, Laura Whitmore, Naomi Scott, Sabrina Elba, Ella Balinska, Lila Moss, Reggie Yates, Rochelle Humes, Olly Murs, HRVY, Damson Idris, and friends. This Portrait series also captures tales of friendship from around the world including inspiring stories from Disney’s UK non-profit partner, MediCinema.
Disney and photographer, filmmaker and cultural curator, Misan Harriman, release the first portraits in the highly anticipated, Mickey & Friends: The Power of Friendship photography series. Harriman captured a star-studded line-up alongside untold stories shared via a special casting call to unearth inspiring friendships. The stars were photographed with their friends and loved ones to mark International Friendship Day, and raise awareness for Disney’s UK non-profit partner, MediCinema.
Misan Harriman, a storyteller renowned for his empowering photography, has captured images that celebrate the power of friendship in its different guises, inspired by the sensational six – Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald, Daisy, Pluto and Goofy. Misan follows the footsteps of countless artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Charlie Chaplin who have been inspired by the iconic characters for over 90 years.
The series of curated photographs highlights the diversity of friendship – from childhood, brotherhood, mother & daughter and work colleagues, to allies, who join the series on their own to represent those that have used their voices to challenge and change culture on our behalf. Pairings including Laura Whitmore and her mother, Carmel; Olly Murs and friend James; Reggie and Cobbie Yates, plus many more. Iconic duo and patrons of MediCinema, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, also feature, with Leigh-Anne Pinnock on her own, as an ally, to symbolise championing others.
As part of the three-year Mickey & Friends Stay True campaign, the full works by Misan Harriman will be displayed in a virtual exhibition in September. The exhibition will include real life friendships shared via cultural hub What We Seee, whose mission is to surface and amplify diverse, uplifting and inspirational stories. The exhibition will also feature friendships and stories captured in photographic form from Disney’s hospital partners and MediCinema. For over 20 years, Disney has supported MediCinema and the work it does to enhance the quality of life for NHS patients and their families through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film. This enduring partnership sees both working together to create meaningful resources and experiences in hospitals for children and those closest to them, which helps build emotional resilience, reduce isolation and encourages people to connect with others – all with the support of everyone’s favourite Disney films and characters.
To highlight the work of MediCinema, the Mickey & Friends: The Power of Friendship series will also feature the touching story of eight-year-old Lucas who has been in and out of hospital his whole life, and has formed a strong bond with MediCinema volunteers, Billy and John, who Lucas considers as his best friends. Through non-profit partners such as these, Disney is committed to create Moments that Matter by bringing comfort and reducing isolation for seriously ill children in hospitals.
Misan Harriman said: “It has been truly empowering to capture so many incredible tales of friendship from across the globe, both in real life and virtually. I hope that seeing the images released today fill people with as much hope as I had in taking them, and the joy of discovering what has brought each of the individuals together. There are so many moving stories that really demonstrate the true power of friendship, as seen with Mickey & Friends, and deliver Moments that Matter for those photographed.”
