So far, we have seen the release of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and a sneak peek at the 1950s Disney Decades Collections. Now, shopDisney has given us a glimpse at the rest of the collections we can expect to see this year!
If you missed our post all about the upcoming 1950s collection, you can find it HERE.
Obviously, we know that we will have collections from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. However, now we have a first look at what some of those representative films and characters will be! Let’s take a look together!
Disney Decades Collections Sneak Peek
1960s
Can you dig it? The 1960s collection will feature The Jungle Book (1967) and 101 Dalmatians (1961)! Personally, The Jungle Book is one of my favorites, but I haven’t loved some of the past merchandise. I am really hoping they knock this one out of the park so I can get my fill of Bagheera, Baloo, and Mowgli. With the 101 Dalmatians, I know Michelle is hoping for some great Cruella de Vil merchandise! Plus, I’m sure we will see plenty of Pongo and Perdita as well.
The 1960s also brought us The Sword in the Stone (1963). Madame Mim is my favorite villain, so I am REALLY hoping to see her represented well! I would also be willing to bet that we will see merchandise for Mary Poppins (1964).
1970s
The 1970s collection is totally groovy! As we can see from the teaser, this collection will feature The Aristocats (1970) and The Muppets Movie (1979). My best friend is obsessed with The Muppets, so I know she is going to be anxiously awaiting this release. However, I do think the inclusion of the The Muppets is interesting since Disney did not acquire the license until 2004.
The 70s also brought us Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Robin Hood (1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), The Rescuers (1977), and Pete’s Dragon (1977). Does this sneak peek “jive” with your vision of Disney in the 1970s?
1980s
Dude! You totally must check out this radical sneak peek for the 1980s! Now, let’s be honest, the 1980s were an interesting time for Disney animation. However, we did get some gems like The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), and The Little Mermaid (1989). And then we also got The Black Cauldron (1985).
While I really expected this decade to focus on The Little Mermaid, based on this sneak peek, it appears Disney is going another route. From the picture, we can see Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers from 1989 and The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. It’s interesting to me that they chose to focus on TV rather than film for this decade. What do you think?
1990s
Now we are entering my decade! I am a total 90s Baby! The 1990s was also The Renaissance of Disney animation and there were so many iconic films from this decade. Seriously though, Disney produced hit after hit in the 90s! We kicked off the decade with The Rescuers Down Under (1990) then moved to my favorite Disney film of all time, Beauty and the Beast (1991). The 90s also brought us Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), A Goofy Movie (1995), Pocahontas (1995), Toy Story (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), A Bug’s Life (1998), and Tarzan (1999).
Based on the teaser pic, this collection will focus on Beauty and the Beast and Darkwing Duck. So with this one, we get a mix of feature film and television animation!
2000s
The 2000s provided a moment of pivot for Disney Animation Studios. We moved away from the traditional style of animation and saw more digital inclusion. In the early 2000s we saw Fantasia 2000 (2000), The Tigger Movie (2000), Dinosaur (2000), The Emperor’s New Groove (2000), Monster’s Inc. (2001), Lilo and Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002), Finding Nemo (2003), Brother Bear (2003), Home on the Range (2004), The Incredibles (2004), Chicken Little (2005), Cars (2006), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Bolt (2008), Up (2009), and The Princess and the Frog (2009).
I love that this sneak peek shows The Princess and the Frog as a prominent feature film of the collection. The inclusion of Bolt…well, that was a choice. I would have loved to see more Pixar included here. Pixar had an AMAZING decade of releases in the early 2000s!
2010s
Finally, we are at the 2010s! While Pixar continued to produce amazing original stories and films, Disney Animation Studios made a comeback as well. I’m looking at you, Frozen! In the 2010s we were watching Toy Story 3 (2010), Tangled (2010), Cars 2 (2011), Brave (2012), Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero 6 (2014), Inside Out (2015), Zootopia (2016), Finding Dory (2016), Moana (2016), Cars 3 (2017), Coco (2017), Toy Story 4 (2019), and Frozen 2 (2019).
From the teaser image, we can see the Toy Story franchise and Frozen films will be highlighted in this upcoming collection! I would also love to see something from Tangled and Brave as well, but that’s just my personal preference.
