Disney’s animated films aren’t just known for their amazing cinematic and visuals. They are also known for tackling many problems and helping their audience understand these easily as well. Over the last couple of years, Disney has been exploring the world of mental health through its animated films. Here are 6 that you should watch soon.
Up (2009)
At a glance, Up may not seem like a film about mental health. However, if you look at it differently, it explores the effects of a loved one’s passing on a person. In this case, we get to see how Carl faced Ellie’s death.
While secluded at first, Carl eventually learns to open up and accept the fact that his dearly beloved has long since passed on.
Inside Out (2015)
Inside Out is Disney’s most popular film that talks about mental health. It’s about 11-year-old Riley as she begins to discover new emotions and her teenage angst as she goes through puberty.
It’s a fun family film that teaches kids a lot of lessons. Inside Out’s depiction of emotions is a good way to help children understand what they’ll go through eventually. Of course, it’s definitely a must-watch film as well.
Monster’s Inc. (2001)
Monster’s Inc. may be about monsters and their job of scaring children. However, it’s also about just how imaginative and innocent a child’s mind can be. Thanks to this film, a lot of parents have come to realize that their children could be prone to be scared of the littlest things they can’t see in the dark.
Finding Nemo (2003)
This film is one of Disney’s earliest forays into mental health topics. As per FinvsFin, the film talks about trauma and anxiety. In it, Marlin faces deep anxiety about the predators of the ocean after losing his wife and all but one of his children to a barracuda. Eventually, Marlin owns up and recovers from his trauma.
He eventually accepts that it’s not fair to seclude Nemo just as he had secluded him for all those years.
Coco (2017)
Coco directly tackles the effects of dementia on the elderly. While the film doesn’t show it upfront, we eventually get to see exactly how Mama Coco suffers deeply from the condition. Disney also shows that despite the condition, it’s really never too late to help others remember the good old days by some means.
Soul (2020)
Soul is one of the more recent entries on this list. It talks about life after death – and the biggest questions in between it. Here, a jazz musician ends up in a place called The Great Before. If he ever wishes to go back to his life, he must find the answers to life.
It’s an emotional and heartwarming tale that everyone should see at least once in their life.
These films aren’t just explorative of mental health, they are also worth watching too. If you have the time, it might be a good idea to explore these films with your kids.
