I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again–I’m not a great cook. That being said, I wanted to give these tasty Disney Parks Churro Bites a try! Churros are a park treat staple, and since we can’t get in the parks right now, I figured we could try to bring a little of the parks into our home!
The recipe from the Disney Parks Blog was pretty easy to follow, and I luckily had most of what I needed already in my house! You’ll notice that I don’t have a star tip for piping bags, so my churros don’t have that iconic star shape. Even without the classic shape, they turned out pretty tasty! My cinnamon was also outdated by a couple of years, but that didn’t seem to affect the taste! Because of my various modifications, I dubbed them my “Quarantine Churro Bites.”
I do have a few tips for you if you want to try to make these at home. First, read through the recipe before you start. I didn’t realize that I needed to divide the cinnamon to use in both the dough and the coating mixture (because I didn’t really pay attention). Second, when you heat up your oil, you don’t have to wait for it to boil. I didn’t know what 350 degree oil looked like, but if you can smell it heating up and it looks a little “jiggly,” you’re probably good. You might also need to try frying a little bit of dough as a test before starting.
Next, if you use a ziplock bag without a piping tip like me, make sure you don’t cut the hole in the corner of the bag that you squeeze the dough out of too big. My first hole was pretty big, so the churros took longer to cook through. They also looked like tater tots. (They still were tasty, though!) Once I made the hole smaller, I was able to make skinnier, longer churros that cooked faster. The recipe tells you to fry them in a 1-quart saucepan or a medium skillet. I tried the saucepan first, which kept boiling over and causing a mess. The skillet made it much easier to see the churros and didn’t boil over. Last, but certainly not least, I highly recommend a side of Nutella for dipping. It was the perfect addition to this tasty treat.
Another great tip I should add is that it’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher handy. I only started a very tiny grease fire right at the end of frying by accidentally dripping a bit of oil on the hot stove, but it was still scary! Luckily, I didn’t get that part on video! The world doesn’t need to see me screaming and running away from the stove.
