For those who are stricken with fear when a holiday rolls around because they’re not good at giving gifts, Valentine’s Day should be a welcome reprieve. This is one holiday where the gifts are pretty much decided for you; you can’t go wrong with the classic flowers and chocolate.
And lest you think this gift is no longer en vogue, think again, a recent study found that flowers are one of the top most desired gifts this Valentine’s day. (Even some men would be happy to receive them.)
But as we were browsing the Bouq’s Valentine’s flower selection this year, we couldn’t help but wonder: why is it that we give flowers to our loved ones on Valentine’s day? We did a little research to find out. So if you’re curious too, keep reading.
Let’s start by clarifying one thing. When we say flowers, we mostly mean roses. After all, that’s the floral most commonly gifted to express romantic love. So let’s dive into the romantic history of roses, specifically.
Some say that the tradition of giving roses for the most romantic day of the year comes from the Victorian tradition of floriography, inspired by the Turks, which is a system of using flowers to communicate messages.
In 1819, Charlotte De Latour published Langage des fleurs (Language of Flowers) based on this system, alphabetically ascribing meaning to all types of flowers, including most of the ones we enjoy and buy for our loved ones today.
In this popular book, De Latour extolled the virtues of the rose (both the flower and the plant) as the representation of love, and from there, the rose gained notoriety as the most romantic floral you can give.
This of course led to a dramatic uptick in the amount of roses sold, and botanists got to work breeding new types of roses to keep up with the demand. Wondering which breed of rose you’re gifting to your beloved today? It’s most likely the American Beauty rose, which was loved by the rich and famous — even Queen Victoria, who had it shipped to her from New Jersey.
Another theory? As the popular poem begins: roses are red. And so is the flush that comes to our face when we’re falling in love or experience a sweet first kiss. The thought is that these blush colored flowers remind us of our first blushes of love — whether they were a month ago or 20 years ago.
Whatever the exact history behind gifting roses is, you can be sure that they’ll be appreciated by anyone you gift them to — lover or friend. Or, choose a more avant-garde floral or plant, like a heart-shaped succulent.
And don’t forget, no matter what type of flower or plant you give, you should always combine it with a sweet note telling your special someone how much they mean to you. A little bit of chocolate or candy of their choice wouldn’t hurt, either. Wishing you a happy Valentine’s Day with your love!
