When it comes to Disney memorabilia, anything that was actually created, owned, or touched by Walt Disney is the ultimate prize. Now, an incredible piece of Disney history is headed to auction next month, and if you have the funds, you could be the lucky owner.
On June 25, 2017 at Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks, California, a hand-drawn map of Disneyland will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. This map was created by Walt Disney and Herb Ryman in September 1953 as a way to help secure funding for the park.
The map is expected to sale for right about 1 million dollars, according to Van Eaton. Okay, most of us don’t have that kind of money, but how cool would it be to have this hanging up in your living room? If you take a closer look at the art (and really, if this isn’t art then I don’t know what is!), you can see areas of Disneyland that never made it to completion (Lilliputian Land). You can also spot classic and iconic landmarks like the train and Frontierland.
Just how much wall space do you need to display your new treasure? The map is roughly three feet by five feet.
Van Eaton is selling the map on behalf of Ron Clark, a Disneyana collector who bought it 40 years ago from a former Disney employee, Grenade Curran. According to the story, Mr. Curran saw the map one day sitting in 1955 sitting in the corner of Walt’s office. He asked if he could have it , and Walt said yes. If only getting it today were that easy!
“That an artifact like this, which is so deeply rooted in the creation of Disneyland, still exists today is astonishing,” Mike Van Eaton, an owner of the auction house, said in a statement, calling it “the most valuable Disneyland artifact ever offered at auction.”
What would you pay for a piece of Disney history as important and cool as this?
