Some of you may recall that Disney Parks Blog released a video promoting Character Couture Makeovers in early May. There were a few glitches with the scheduling of these at first, but I am happy to report that these makeovers are going perfectly now! And have I mentioned lately that I have the best job ever? Because there aren’t many people lucky enough to call getting a Minnie Mouse inspired makeover “work!”
Although the makeovers can be scheduled at any salon on Walt Disney World property, I chose to have mine at Ivy Trellis Salon at the Grand Floridian. My stylist Scully was a real life fairy godmother! She was kind, funny, and very patient. We spent the first few minutes of the session discussing the character and look that I wanted. There are no set characters or look books for these makeovers, and that is a purposeful decision. The stylists work with each client to create a look that reflects the intended character and works with the client’s hair type and length. I recommend taking in a few pictures of different styles for inspiration but keeping an open mind.
Once we decided on a look (we had quite the discussion over Minnie ears versus a vintage style,) Scully went right to work. I have thin, fine hair that never behaves for me, but she whipped it into shape (the shape of Minnie ears!) in just a few minutes. She was also very considerate of my comfort during the process. She asked several times if the ears were too tight or if the hairpins were uncomfortable. (The answer to both was no.) I took my own bow from Buns and Braids Shop on Etsy, but this style comes with a sequin ear and bow headpiece. (Princess styles come with a tiara.) After the style was complete, I got pixie dusted with glitter! This is optional, but I’m of the opinion that glitter is always the right choice.
Since my reservation was for the Timeless Transformation, it included hair, makeup, and nails. We chose a deep blue with a hint of shimmer that matched the polka dots in my dress.
While my nails were drying, Scully moved on to my makeup, the most intricate and time-consuming part of the entire makeover. I chose a fun, over-the-top makeup look because my everyday makeup is pretty minimal; I wanted something different and dramatic. But if you aren’t feeling quite as adventurous, you can certainly request a more natural look. The eyes were definitely the stars of my makeup! The lids were covered in black glitter and the creases were done in blue with white polka dots. Liner, highlighter, and false eyelashes completed the look. My eyeshadow was definitely a work of art, and I felt a little guilty when I washed it off later that night. Scully also applied blush, lipstick, and brow powder. If you like to wear foundation, you may want to apply it before you get to the salon.
After my Timeless Transformation was complete, I hopped on the monorail and spent the evening at the Magic Kingdom. I visited Mickey and Minnie, both of whom were quite impressed with my look. I also took advantage of every photo op I could find. I was stopped by several guests and Cast Members asking about and complimenting my look. I got a LOT of attention! I’m not shy, so this was all part of the fun for me. But if you are a little more reserved, brace yourself, because you will get stopped–probably multiple times.
My hair and makeup held up well throughout my park visit and even withstood a short rain storm. It felt secure and comfortable all evening, and I felt adorable! Polka dot eye shadow just might be my new everyday look!
And now for the details: These Character Couture Makeovers are offered at all the Walt Disney World salons and spas, and any stylist can make this happen for you (but I highly recommend requesting Scully!) There are three different levels of services from which to choose. Storybook Style costs $80 and only includes a hairstyle. The Magical Makeover package costs $105 and includes both hair and makeup. The Timeless Transformation is $120 and includes hair, makeup, and nails. All of these packages are also available for a slightly less expensive cost for Fashionistas under 12. My Timeless Transformation took about an hour and a half in all.
These makeovers would be perfect for a girls’ day, a bonding day between mothers and daughters, or even a bachelorette party! For me, the actual experience of having the makeover done was just as much fun as going out and showing it off. I would love to experience it with some of the special women in my life! And of course, this would be absolutely perfect for anyone attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!
I hope that this helps you plan your Character Couture Makeover. Leave us a comment and tell us what you think of this new service and what character you would choose! Are you planning on getting a makeover done soon?
